The play evokes the phenomenon of choreomania - dance epidemics that have infected the inhabitants of various corners of Europe since the Middle Ages - inducing a possessive trance. It reveals the passion of dance as a kind of poisoning that permeates the dancers' biographies and their physically consuming bodies. It also proves the power of community dance, resembling mania in the intensity of movement expression. It affirms the liberating power of dance, which like an "unapologetic virus in the social fabric" has the power to manifest disparate identities. Poison is an irrepressible patchwork of diverse dance techniques: from ballet to voguing.
