about the show

TOACA is a performance that grows out of the need to talk about ritual, spirituality and passing - but not through pathos, but through dance, costume, rhythm and symbol. The toaca of the title is a wooden bell used in Orthodox monasteries - an instrument that announces the time of prayer, death, life and community time. In the performance, it becomes a metaphor for transformation, as well as a point of contact between two traditions - Romanian and Polish.

The performance was created by an international team: its creators are choreographers Mădălina Dan, Andrea Gavriliu and Ștefan Lupu - artists with strong roots in Romanian movement theater - who collaborated
with Polish Dance Theater dancers in the second half of 2024. The result is a show full of images, masks, rituals and music inspired by folk motifs, which moves and moves with the full power of body and presence, but also with words.

We close the first part of our Romanian tour today at 6pm (CEST) with a screening of "Toaca" at the Hungarian Csiky Gergely Theatre in Timișoara!

This is not the end of our presence in Romania, we will return with "Toaca" in October to present it at the most important theater festival in Bucharest - FNT - Festivalul National de Teatru / The National Theatre Festival!

Tournée “TOACA” is part of the celebration of the Poland-Romania 2024-2025 Cultural Season, which aims to strengthen artistic and social relations between our countries. The project is implemented in cooperation with:

- Adam Mickiewicz Institute - co-organizer of the Season
- Romanian Institute of Culture in Warsaw, which supports Polish-Romanian cultural projects and builds bridges between artists
- The Polish Institute in Bucharest, which actively supports the presence of Polish culture in Romania.

The Poland-Romania Cultural Season 2024 - 2025 is organized by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, with the support of the Polish Institute in Bucharest together with the Romanian Ministry of Culture and the Romanian Institute of Culture. The season features dozens of events including exhibitions, music, theater, film and literature.

The “TOACA” tour is not just a performance presentation - it is an invitation to empathize, to listen to what bodies can say about memory, identity and community.

We invite you to follow the social media of the Polish Dance Theater and the profiles of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute - more information about the tournée and materials coming soon.
